Achieving Free and Prosperous Society

Reducing the size of government and dismantling the social state to achieve a prosperous society

Government has a very important role in a free society, that role is protection of individuals' life, liberty, and property. These are the roles for which government is originally designed for and for which the government is given powers by the people. Therefore, government's job is maintaining strong military, efficient police force, and fair and impartial judicial system. All else is to be left to individuals to decide for themselves.

Classical liberals/libertarians strongly believe that too-much government is very harmful to the society as a whole, and makes the people it serves increasingly less free and less prosperous. The arguments presented in the earlier section (the truth about the nature of government) are self-evident. The classical liberal/libertarian philosophy thus properly labels most government programs as inefficient and wasteful, and it correctly identifies government encroachment into people's lives as detrimental to people's personal and economic freedoms.

Classical liberals/libertarians also believe that greatest levels of prosperity are achieved when government is limited to its primary role, the protection of individual's life, liberty, and property, and nothing more. In a free society, lack of government restrictions and great degree of freedom of the individuals to pursue their own self-interests and keep the fruits of their labor creates opportunities and incentives for those individuals to improve their lives, which results in improvement of the living standard and the greater opportunities of the whole society.

The way of achieving a prosperous society therefore lays in cutting the government to its proper size and keeping it as minimal and decentralized as possible. Government's purpose should be properly redefined and its role limited to the protection of liberty.

Introduction of free market competition in government social services would allow for freedom of choice, resulting in improvement in quality and lower prices of social services, bringing an end to the inefficient government monopolies. Once freedom of choice is restored back with the people, individuals would be in charge of their own healthcare, education, and retirement, eventually bringing an end to the social state. Paying less for all those services in a free market would enable individuals to save more of their own money for spending on other things which are important to them.

Being able to keep all the fruits of their labor, as well as believing and relying in the power of free markets to deliver the best goods and services, people would stop relying on big socialist government and stop asking it to solve problems and provide “free” things for them. With less money spent by government, the power would slowly be taken away from the politicians, reducing their ability to practice corruption through selling of favors. The remaining small government would become more manageable and accountable to the people. Unlike the present socialist state which pushes for equality at the expense of liberty and prosperity, the great opportunities found only in a classical liberal/libertarian free society would lead to the greatest degrees of both prosperity and equality of its people.
